Joe Tsai: Only by Opening Source Can AI be Proliferated; Qwen Open-source Models 470+
The 2026 World Internet Conference opened today (3rd) in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. Joe Tsai, co-founder and chairman of BABA-W (09988.HK), said AI demand continues to ascend, while computing power supply is falling short of demand.
He believed only by opening source can AI be proliferated, as opening source can effectively reduce R&D costs for small and medium-sized enterprises, which is particularly important for developing countries.
He said Alibaba's Qwen has open-sourced more than 470 models, with cumulative global downloads exceeding 4 billion and more than 330,000 derivative models developed.
