Executives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) testified under oath on Monday (5th, US time) at a New York City Council hearing on the potential risks of AI. The hearing came after discussions surrounding the risks of advanced AI models intensified over the past month.

According to a statement released by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the hearing will be held in the rare format of a "Council Committee of the Whole". Menin said the companies will be asked to explain the threats posed by AI and provide views on potential legislative proposals.

Major AI laboratories, particularly OpenAI and Anthropic, are facing mounting scrutiny over their safety and security measures. Industry researchers warned in September that the two companies are racing to develop models that could cause catastrophic harm or even lead to human extinction, while calling on governments to strengthen regulation.

Menin said that although Meta had confirmed its participation in the hearing as early as the end of last month, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google only agreed to attend after the City Council threatened to issue subpoenas. New York City also issued a subpoena last week to SpaceX (SPCX.US) CEO Elon Musk, requesting that he or a representative from SpaceXAI appear to testify.
