NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) has launched the Nemotron 3.5 Lightning model, describing it as a "lightweight" model capable of running on a single GPU on a personal computer.

This marks NVIDIA's first open-source model launch after its CEO Jensen Huang called on the US government to support open-source models and avoid imposing restrictive measures prematurely.

The new Nemotron model is available for enterprises to download, use and modify free of charge without obtaining permission from NVIDIA or paying fees.

For NVIDIA, open-source AI helps drive chip sales as the related models still need to run on GPUs, while lower costs are also expected to increase usage, making them more attractive than proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
