SpaceX (SPCX.US) and Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) will initially invest USD16.8 billion to build the advanced AI semiconductor gigafactory Terafab in Grimes County, Texas, aiming to narrow the gap between global chip supply and the 1 trillion-watt computing capacity expected to be required by the two companies over the coming years.

SpaceX said in a statement that future expansion phases could substantially increase the total investment amount, and the plant is expected to employ at least 3,000 workers.

Elon Musk said Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing back to the US, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in Texas and enabling the companies to mass produce AI chips for use on Earth and in space.
