Alphabet Ends Down 4% as Chief Scientist Jeff Dean Announces Departure

Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.US) announced that its AI division is undergoing restructuring. Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, who has served the company for 27 years, will leave the company, while Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will become Chairman of Google DeepMind and concurrently serve as Chief Scientist of Alphabet.

Following the announcement, Alphabet shares slumped 4.05% on Wednesday (5th) to USD360.13.

Dean, a pioneer in the AI field who helped drive multiple key technological breakthroughs at Google, will co-found a new company with Alphabet Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. Alphabet will also invest in the startup.
