The market looked forward to the end of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, leading to mixed performances in U.S. bourse Wednesday. The DJIA settled above 48,000 for the first time, rallying 326 points or 0.7% to close at 48,254, marking an all-time high. The S&P 500 was nearly flat, rising by less than 0.1% to 6,850. The Nasdaq dipped 61 points or 0.3% to close at 23,406.
The market was betting on the imminent reopening of the government, which prompted investors to reinvest in the financial sector. Banks such as Goldman Sachs (GS.US), JPMorgan (JPM.US), and American Express (AXP.US) all reached new highs, shoring up the DJIA. Citigroup (C.US), Wells Fargo (WFC.US), and Bank of America (BAC.US) had a good shape too, boosting financial ETFs by nearly 1%.
AI concept stocks remained rattled, which reflected ongoing investor concerns about high valuations. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US) surged 9%, while Oracle (ORCL.US) and Palantir (PLTR.US) subsided. Major chip stock NVIDIA (NVDA.US) edged up by 0.3%.
