Nasdaq Closes Down 1%+ on Oct 1st Amid Rising Mideast Tensions; Chevron Rallies 2% Against Mkt

Iran finally launched missiles at Israel, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The VIX index, also known as the "fear gauge," surged 15%, leading to a drop in the three major US stock indices on the first day of 4Q24. The DJIA collapsed as much as over 384 points during the day, ultimately closing down 173 points, or 0.4%, at 42,156. The S&P 500 slipped 53 points, or 0.9%, closing at 5,708. The Nasdaq experienced the largest decline, losing 278 points, or 1.5%, to close at 17,910.

Oil prices soared nearly 4%, boosting energy stocks. Chevron (CVX.US) spiked 1.7% against the trend. Small-cap stocks were hit, with the Russell 2000 index sliding 1.5%.

Large tech stocks bore the brunt of Tuesday's rout. NVIDIA (NVDA.US) dived 3.7%. Apple (AAPL.US) waned nearly 3% after a fire halted production at its Tata factory in India. Tesla (TSLA.US) sank over 1%. However, Meta (META.US) bucked the trend, hitting a historic high and closing up 0.7%.
