18 Dec 2024 05:01
As investors have digested the latest strong US retail sales data and were waiting for the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy decision to be announced on Wednesday afternoon, the US stock market closed lower on Tuesday. The DJIA fell 267 points or 0.6% to close at 43,449, marking a nine-day losing streak, the longest since February 1978. The S&P 500 dropped 23 points or 0.4%, closing at 6,050. The Nasdaq closed down 64 points or 0.3% at 20,109.

The DJIA, primarily composed of blue-chip stocks, began its decline after closing above 45,000 for the first time in early December.

Having slipped into correction territory, NVIDIA (NVDA.US) continued to falter over 1%. Broadcom (AVGO.US) waned about 4% on Tuesday after hitting a new high yesterday. Tesla (TSLA.US), which set an all-time high on Monday, leaped another 3.6%.
